Ahmad Jamal — Poinciana
At The Pershing · 1958
Label: Argo/Wax Time · Genre: Jazz / Jazz Piano · Country: USA · From: Chicago, IL, North America
Ahmad Jamal recorded this live album at the Pershing Hotel's lounge bar in Chicago's South Side in 1958, to an audience of perhaps two hundred people. It became the best-selling jazz album of its time — outselling Kind of Blue for several years. Miles Davis cited Jamal as his single greatest influence, particularly his use of space: the notes he didn't play.
Did you know: Jamal's entire trio — piano, bass, drums — was recorded with a single microphone placed in the middle of the room. The warmth of the recording is due to the room itself, not studio engineering.
