Al Green — Let's Stay Together
Let's Stay Together · 1971
Label: Hi Records · Genre: Soul / Soul · Country: USA · From: Memphis, TN, North America
Al Green and producer Willie Mitchell made every Hi Records album in the same building — a converted movie theatre in Memphis called Royal Recording. Mitchell's approach was to layer live string sections over deliberately lo-fi drums, creating a sound that felt intimate no matter how loud you played it. Let's Stay Together spent nine weeks at number one on the R&B charts.
Did you know: Al Green wrote the title track in a single afternoon after a breakup argument with his girlfriend. He sang it in one take. Mitchell was reluctant to release it because he thought it sounded too simple.
