Bobbi Humphrey — Harlem River Drive
Blacks and Blues · 1973
Label: Blue Note · Genre: Jazz / Jazz-Funk · Country: USA · From: Marlin, TX, North America
Bobbi Humphrey was the first woman signed to Blue Note Records. Blacks and Blues was produced by the Mizell Brothers — the same team behind Donald Byrd's Black Byrd — who transformed her jazz flute technique into something that felt like summer in New York. Harlem River Drive became a DJ staple across decades for its floating groove.
Did you know: Humphrey's flute was recorded so close to the microphone that you can hear her breath on the reed. This wasn't a mistake — the Mizells insisted on it. The intimacy was the point.
