Cymande — Bra
Cymande · 1972
Label: Janus · Genre: Funk / Afro-Funk · Country: United Kingdom · From: London, Europe
Cymande formed in London in the early 70s, a collective of musicians from Guyana, Jamaica, and the Caribbean diaspora. Their sound was something no one had named yet: Afro-funk played with the space and patience of reggae. They toured the US and became a cult act in Black neighborhoods that never heard them on radio. Hip-hop discovered them through their breaks.
Did you know: Cymande never had a hit in the UK. Their records were largely ignored there when released. They became significant first in the US through club culture, then globally through hip-hop sampling. Their UK reputation was built entirely in retrospect.
