D'Angelo — Untitled (How Does It Feel)
Voodoo · 2000
Label: Virgin · Genre: Soul / Neo-Soul · Country: USA · From: Richmond, VA, North America
D'Angelo spent five years making Voodoo, recording to tape with drummer Questlove to capture the human imprecision of classic soul — the drag and push of live performance, the way a great groove sits slightly behind the beat. Untitled (How Does It Feel) is barely there: voice, electric guitar, the slowest possible pulse. The music video became one of the most discussed images of its era. D'Angelo subsequently said the attention to his body had destroyed his relationship to the music — and disappeared from public life for fourteen years, returning in 2014 with Black Messiah.
Did you know: Untitled (How Does It Feel) was recorded across three sessions over six months, each take built from scratch. D’Angelo performed all the instruments himself, recording on analogue tape at Electric Lady Studios. The accompanying video, directed by Paul Hunter, was so sexually charged that D’Angelo later said the attention it attracted caused him significant distress and contributed to his fourteen-year withdrawal from public life.
