Fatoumata Diawara — Massa
Massa · 2026
Label: Nø Førmat! · Genre: Soul / Malian Folk · From: Bamako, West Africa
Massa is Fatoumata Diawara’s most personal album yet — a record that stops reaching and simply waits. Where her previous work chased crossover moments through collaborations with Disclosure and Gorillaz, Massa turns inward. Co-produced with French artist Matthieu Chedid (-M-), it sings entirely in Bambara and explores motherhood, faith, memory, resilience, and a tribute to her late father. The opening track ‘Djanné’ lands with tight funk guitar and a historical urgency — named for the ancient Malian city. The rest of the album strips further back, letting the voice carry the weight. At just 39 minutes, it leaves space for what’s not said.
Did you know: Diawara was once nearly coerced into an arranged marriage when she returned to Mali as a young woman. She fled back to Paris to escape, and it was that experience — of belonging nowhere and everywhere — that shaped the restlessness and emotional depth that runs through all of her music.
