Funkadelic — Maggot Brain
Maggot Brain · 1971
Label: Westbound · Genre: Funk / Psychedelic Funk · Country: USA · From: Detroit, MI, North America
George Clinton told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play the title track as if he'd just been told his mother had died — then as if he found out she was still alive. The result is ten minutes of solo guitar that reduces people to tears. Clinton was reportedly on multiple substances during the session. The cover art shows a woman half-buried in earth, her head covered in maggots. This was not subtle.
Did you know: The rest of the band was muted in the final mix. Eddie Hazel's solo guitar and bass guitar are the only instruments audible for most of the title track. Clinton erased the rhythm section's hard work entirely.
