Funkadelic — One Nation Under a Groove
One Nation Under a Groove · 1978
Label: Warner Bros. · Genre: Funk / P-Funk · Country: USA · From: Detroit, MI, North America
One Nation Under a Groove was the moment George Clinton made his most direct, most physical record. Where Maggot Brain had been a psychedelic manifesto, One Nation was a party invitation. The title track runs eight minutes and was designed to be impossible to resist — a bass line so locked in that Clinton described it as a force of nature rather than a composition. The album sold a million copies and proved that funk could be both transcendent and commercial without becoming either. It remains the entry point to the Parliament-Funkadelic universe.
Did you know: One Nation Under a Groove was Parliament-Funkadelic’s only single to reach the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. The recording session at United Sound Studios in Detroit featured over thirty musicians, vocalists, and crew members all performing simultaneously in a controlled chaos George Clinton described as ‘organised noise’. The track has been sampled over 300 times.
