Getz/Gilberto — The Girl From Ipanema
Getz/Gilberto · 1964
Label: Verve · Genre: Jazz / Bossa Nova · Country: Brazil · From: Rio de Janeiro, South America
João Gilberto and Stan Getz recorded this album in a single evening at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey. Astrud Gilberto — João's wife, not a professional singer — was asked to sing the English verse of The Girl From Ipanema because no one else in the room spoke English. She had never recorded before. That accidental performance became one of the most recognized recordings in music history.
Did you know: Astrud Gilberto was paid nothing for the session. She was there as a translator, not a performer. When the record became a massive hit, she received no songwriting or performance royalties. She later sued for compensation.
