Cameron Lew records as Ginger Root from Los Angeles, building a fictional universe of Japanese television studios, workplace dramas, and '80s anime aesthetics around meticulous bedroom pop that sounds both utterly contemporary and completely retro. City Slicker, an EP released in 2021, features Juban District — named for the Tokyo neighbourhood that is the setting of Sailor Moon. It's a song that would fit perfectly on a 1983 City Pop compilation, made by a Californian born in 1998 who learned the genre's vocabulary through pure love of the form.
