Lee "Scratch" Perry & Mouse on Mars — Spatial, No Problem
Spatial, No Problem · 2026
Label: Domino · Genre: Funk / Dub Krautrock · From: Berlin, Europe
In December 2019, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry flew to Berlin and spent three days recording with experimental electronic duo Mouse on Mars at their Paraverse Studio. He had one request: no reggae. What emerged from those sessions was dub logic collapsing into Krautrock, motorik rhythms tangled with digital glitches, and Perry’s voice moving through as both guide and deserter — muttering, chanting, vanishing. Perry died in 2021 before the album was completed. Mouse on Mars spent years finishing what he started, and the result is formally released as the reggae legend’s final official album. When Perry first heard the word ‘spatial’ to describe the recording concept, he simply replied: ‘Spatial? No problem.’ The album had its title.
Did you know: Perry arrived in Berlin with suitcases full of knickknacks, icons, stickers, and talismans, which he arranged around the studio walls. He also made Jamaican fish stew during sessions. The physical space and smell of the room became, in Mouse on Mars’ view, part of the music.
