Loose Ends — Choose Me (Rescue Me)
A Little Spice · 1984
Label: Virgin · Genre: Soul / British Soul / Boogie · Country: United Kingdom · From: London, Europe
Loose Ends were Carl McIntosh, Jane Eugene, and Steve Nichol — three Black British musicians from London who became the first British act to reach number one on the US Billboard R&B chart when Hangin’ On a String crossed over in 1985. A Little Spice, their debut, was recorded between 1982 and 1984 with American producer Nick Martinelli, who brought a Philadelphia soul sophistication to the sessions. The result was a record that sat entirely outside the synth-pop mainstream of its year: warm acoustic bass, live drums, lush strings. Choose Me (Rescue Me) was the sixth single from the album. The group never fully broke into the mainstream UK pop chart but built a devoted following among soul and rare groove collectors whose estimates of A Little Spice have only grown since.
Did you know: Hangin’ On a String (Contemplating) made Loose Ends the first British group ever to top the US Billboard R&B chart in 1985. They remained largely unknown to mainstream UK audiences despite this achievement — one of those frustrating quirks of the music industry where geography and genre segregation cost a group the recognition they deserved.
