First Light is Makoto Matsushita's debut album and one of City Pop's most quietly beloved records — a record of such consistent quality that it appears on virtually every serious City Pop listening list. Matsushita was a session guitarist and member of the group Sadistics alongside Masayoshi Takanaka before striking out solo. First Light sits in the AOR-leaning wing of City Pop: immaculate production, warm groove, songs that feel designed for early morning listening with the city still waking up.
