Mariya Takeuchi — Plastic Love
Variety · 1984
Label: Moon Records · Genre: City Pop / Synth Pop · From: Tokyo, East Asia
Plastic Love is City Pop's most famous song — a track about emotional detachment and superficial romance that became the gateway to an entire genre. Takeuchi recorded it in 1984 for her sixth album Variety, produced by her husband Tatsuro Yamashita. It was a moderate hit in Japan. Then in 2017, a YouTube upload went viral through the recommendation algorithm, and Plastic Love became one of the most streamed Japanese songs in history, introducing tens of millions of listeners to City Pop in an instant.
Did you know: Mariya Takeuchi and Tatsuro Yamashita have been married since April 1982. Yamashita produced Variety and arranged many of Takeuchi's most celebrated songs. Despite being one of Japanese music's most celebrated couples, they have never performed together publicly.
