Masayoshi Takanaka — Ready to Fly
Takanaka · 1977
Label: Kitty Records · Genre: City Pop / Jazz Fusion · From: Tokyo, East Asia
Takanaka, the album, contains Ready to Fly — a song Takanaka originally performed as a member of the Sadistics, and which became the most beloved track of his solo career. It opens slowly, builds over six minutes into a soaring guitar meditation, and then releases. Ready to Fly became a staple of every Takanaka live show for fifty years, a fact that says everything about what it achieves. The album also features Jun Fukamachi, Rey Ohara, and Chris Mosdell contributing to its particular alchemy.
Did you know: Ready to Fly was originally a Sadistics composition that Takanaka brought to his solo career. His live version at the Yokohama Baseball Stadium in 1981 alongside Carlos Santana became one of the most celebrated concert moments in Japanese music history — two guitar masters exchanging phrases at 5,000 miles from their respective homes.
