Miki Matsubara — Stay With Me
Pocket Park · 1980
Label: Pony Canyon · Genre: City Pop / Disco · From: Osaka, East Asia
Miki Matsubara recorded Pocket Park at 20 years old, producing a disco-inflected City Pop debut that contained one of the genre's most enduring songs. Mayonaka no Door — Stay With Me — was a moderate hit on release in 1979 before the rest of the world discovered it 41 years later. The song saw a resurgence in 2020, reaching the top of global streaming charts in multiple countries as the City Pop wave broke internationally, 20 years after Matsubara's death at 44 from cancer.
Did you know: Matsubara died in 2004, never knowing her music would reach tens of millions of people worldwide. When Stay With Me went viral in 2020, it became a bittersweet symbol of posthumous discovery — her family expressed both joy at the recognition and sadness that she could not experience it.
