Parliament — Give Up The Funk
Mothership Connection · 1975
Label: Casablanca · Genre: Funk / P-Funk · Country: USA · From: Detroit, MI, North America
George Clinton built Mothership Connection as a Black science fiction album before that was a recognizable genre. Parliament's touring show involved a working spaceship lowered onto the stage with a smoke machine. The funk was metaphysical — Clinton was preaching that dancing was liberation, that getting loose was political. A concept so specific and so weird that it worked entirely.
Did you know: The spaceship that lowered onto Parliament's stage cost more than some small record labels' entire budgets. Clinton financed it himself. The P-Funk Earthtour in 1976 grossed more per show than the Rolling Stones.
