Pharoah Sanders — The Creator Has a Master Plan
Karma · 1969
Label: Impulse! · Genre: Jazz / Spiritual Jazz · Country: USA · From: New York, NY, North America
Karma was Pharoah Sanders' most accessible record and most radical statement simultaneously. The Creator Has a Master Plan runs over thirty minutes across both sides of the original vinyl — a slow ascent from percussion and bass toward something that sounds like collective transcendence. Sanders had worked with John Coltrane until his death in 1967, and Karma is in direct conversation with A Love Supreme — the same impulse, rawer, less composed, more willing to scream. Leon Thomas sang the track, yodeling in a technique traced back to African field recordings.
Did you know: The Creator Has a Master Plan runs 32 minutes across both sides of the original vinyl — the entire album is essentially one piece. Pharoah Sanders recorded it in 1969 with vocalist Leon Thomas, whose yodelling technique traced back to Central African pygmy music. The record was made two years after the death of John Coltrane, whose spiritual influence shapes every second of it.
