Stereolab — French Disko
Refried Ectoplasm · 1995
Label: Duophonic · Genre: Rare Groove / Avant-Pop · Country: United Kingdom · From: London, Europe
Stereolab formed in London in 1990, led by Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier. Their sound was an absurdist meeting point between Can's motorik rhythms, French 60s yé-yé pop, and Marxist political philosophy delivered in Sadier's detached French accent. Refried Ectoplasm compiled their early B-sides and rarities — the most formally experimental music they made.
Did you know: Stereolab's lyrics are explicitly Marxist. Sadier has described them as an attempt to embed political philosophy in a form that people would absorb without noticing. Several of their song titles are direct references to Jean Baudrillard and Guy Debord.
