Sugar Babe — Down Town
Songs · 1975
Label: Niagara · Genre: City Pop / Pop Rock · From: Tokyo, East Asia
Songs is the only studio album by Sugar Babe — the band that contained Tatsuro Yamashita and Taeko Ohnuki before both became City Pop legends. Released in 1975 on Eiichi Ohtaki's Niagara label and produced by Ohtaki himself, it barely sold at the time. But Songs is now considered the origin point of City Pop — the moment where the genre's essential values of sophisticated pop production, warm emotional directness, and Western musical influence were first concentrated into an album. Down Town became one of Japan's most beloved songs, covered hundreds of times in the decades since.
Did you know: Songs sold only around 20,000 copies on its original 1975 release — a commercial failure that led to Sugar Babe's dissolution the following year. Both Yamashita and Ohnuki's subsequent solo careers were shaped by the experience. The album is now considered City Pop's founding document and has been reissued repeatedly to meet demand.
