The Meters — Cissy Strut
The Meters · 1969
Label: Josie · Genre: Funk / New Orleans Funk · Country: USA · From: New Orleans, LA, North America
The Meters were New Orleans' hardest working session band before anyone outside the city knew their name. Cissy Strut was their debut single, a groove so locked and minimal it sounded like a machine built by humans. The track contains almost nothing: a guitar riff, organ, bass, and drums. No melody, no lyrics, no crescendo. Just the pocket, held for three minutes.
Did you know: Cissy Strut was written on the spot during a recording session. Producer Alan Toussaint booked the band for a session and told them to play something. They played this. The entire band was improvising.
