Back Stabbers was the O'Jays' Philadelphia International debut and the album that made Gamble and Huff national stars. The title track — Huff's ominous piano, Thom Bell's swirling strings, and a warning about smiling faces that arrives before the group even sings — topped the R&B chart in 1972 and reached number three pop. The album also carried 'Love Train,' a number one, and is still cited as the pinnacle of the Philly sound.
