Tomoko Aran — Midnight Pretenders
Fuyü-Kükan · 1983
Label: Warner Bros. · Genre: City Pop / Synth Pop · From: Tokyo, East Asia
Fuyü-Kükan — floating space — is Tomoko Aran's third album, a 1983 record that blurred City Pop, new wave, and proto-industrial textures with bilingual vocals that stretched the market two ways at once. Midnight Pretenders became its signature track and one of City Pop's most haunted songs. In 2022, The Weeknd sampled it on Out of Time, introducing Aran to a new global audience four decades after the recording.
Did you know: The Weeknd's use of Midnight Pretenders on Out of Time in 2022 caused a surge of interest in Aran's catalogue. The track had been recorded in 1983; The Weeknd was born in 1990. This 39-year gap between creation and sampling is one of the longest in recent music history.
