Yurie Kokubu — Snobbish Night
Relief 72 Hours · 1983
Label: Air Records · Genre: City Pop / Jazz Fusion · From: Tokyo, East Asia
Yurie Kokubu's debut album title encapsulates City Pop's fantasy: Relief 72 Hours — three days away from work, from the city, from obligation. Released in 1983 and produced by Tetsuji Hayashi, it opens with Snob na Yoru e (Snobbish Night) — a declaration of intention to head out into the city's pleasures. Kokubu became one of City Pop's most versatile vocalists, appearing on records by Toshiki Kadomatsu and Casiopea members, and later converting to Christian music in the 1990s.
Did you know: Kokubu co-hosted a TV special with Toshiki Kadomatsu in 2016, reuniting the producer and vocalist 33 years after Relief 72 Hours. She had been active in Christian music throughout the intervening decades while maintaining connections to the City Pop world.
