Yussef Kamaal were a South London duo — drummer Yussef Dayes and keyboardist Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu) — who made exactly one album together before splitting in 2017 when Dayes was refused entry to the United States under Trump's travel restrictions. Black Focus is that album, and it is a landmark: '70s jazz-funk filtered through London's pirate radio culture, broken beat and drum & bass, recorded in spontaneous sessions at Quartermass Studios with a loose ensemble including Shabaka Hutchings and Mansur Brown. Gilles Peterson signed them after a 20-minute live set at his Worldwide Awards; the album came out six months later.
